What 78kg of CO₂e actually looks like

By Otraa

We claim a renewed iPhone saves roughly 78kg of CO₂e against a newly manufactured one. Here is what sits behind that.

Where the emissions are

For a smartphone, manufacturing accounts for around 80% of lifetime carbon footprint. The mining, refining, fabrication and assembly happen before the device is ever switched on. Charging it for years is comparatively trivial.

What that means

Extending a device's life is the single most effective thing anyone can do to reduce its footprint. Not recycling it — recycling recovers a fraction of the materials at significant energy cost. Keeping it in use.

The comparison

78kg is roughly a return flight from Vienna to Berlin, or driving about 350km in an average petrol car. Per device. It is not nothing, and it is not everything — but it is real, and it is the entire reason this business exists.
